Material Spotlight: ‘Rock out’ at Home with Granite

Material Spotlight: ‘Rock out’ at Home with Granite
31/03/2022 Averill

Cheesy headline, right? But what most people don’t know is just how incredible granite really is – especially as a material in your interior styling and décor.

We’re big time fans of this igneous rock (which means it’s made from lava or magma), so here’s a few tidbits about one of our favourite materials. Oh, and read through to the end for some pro tips on how you can ‘rock out’ with granite at home.

Granite is natural, sustainable and super strong

Granite is one of the oldest rocks on the planet – we’re talking millions of years old here, folks. Commonly known as ‘plutonic rock’ in scientific circles, granite is the rock that forms most of the Earth’s crust (kinda cool, right?). It’s formed mostly from feldspar, quartz and a smattering of other materials when magma cools, giving it a grainy texture visible to the eye.

You might already know it’s natural and sustainable, but one of the biggest benefits of granite is how strong it is. Second only in strength to diamonds, it’s a hard rock that’s built to last, quite literally. That’s why it’s a great option for your kitchen counters, cabinet hardware and other highly used surfaces around the home.

Granite is ubiquitous, one-of-a-kind and versatile

What makes granite so wonderful is that first of all, it’s EVERYWHERE. Among its many uses over the millenia, it’s the stone in Stonehenge in the UK, the rock face of Mount Rushmore in the US and is often a common feature of many rock climbing walls.

Due to how it’s formed, no two pieces are alike, which is why we love using granite wherever we can in our cabinet knobs, drawer pulls and cabinet handles. Like our Green Granite Hex Knob, the perfect addition to any zen space or chic Boho home.

A few tips on how to ‘rock out’ with granite at home

Speaking of home, if you’re looking for a natural material that’s going to give you more bang for your buck, here are three quick tips you might like to try to incorporate granite into your casa.

Add a granite table top

Granite countertops are quite common and for good reason. With granite’s high durability and strength it’s a very suitable choice for your kitchen, being one of the most heat resistant countertops on the market. It’s beautifully unique patterning and veining is a bonus!

Want to step outside the box? Make a big statement with a granite top on your dining room table. Similarly, you could take any granite slab and place it on top of any other furniture piece – like a dresser, sideboard or coffee table – to liven things up a little.

Upcycle pre-loved furniture with granite knobs or pulls

You may have already caught our beginner’s guide to upcycling furniture, but adding some granite hardware to an old dresser is a great way to breathe new life into a space.

Check out either our Green Granite Rectangle Pull or Green Granite and Brass Cylinder Pull. They’re both excellently handcrafted pieces designed to be equally grounding and elegant in a variety of places around your home.

Spruce up your cheeseboard!

Are you a fan of charcuterie? You know, fancy (and often stinky) cheeses with an assortment of crackers, breads, dips and meats? For that extra sustainability point, you could take a leftover piece of granite and fashion it into a cheeseboard!

It’s a quick afternoon DIY project where all you need to do is simply stick fabric dots on one side (so it won’t mark or damage your table) and give it a good clean. Then, invite the crew over for a movie night or a backyard picnic (weather permitting, of course!).

Don’t take your home for ‘granite’…

You’re welcome for that pun! But seriously, your home is a space that’s as unique as you are, so why not take the time to make it shine. For your next weekend project, take a scroll through our online shop for those finishing touches – they really do make all the difference when you’re on a mission to reject the ordinary.
